New Hospital Approach to Malpractice

In recent years, hospitals have become increasingly open with patients: over 80 percent of hospitals in my study have a policy of apologizing to patients when errors occur. And hospitals are more willing to discuss and learn from errors with hospital staff.

    A new approach to malpractice is an apology? Are there screenings of Sesame Street re-runs and mandatory naptimes in Med School now?

    Most people start learning from their mistakes and offering apologies just shortly after they dispense with a high chair and bib.

      No Roget, there are screenings of Barney and they learn a song about how apologies make the world go round. Only the best for our nations medical practitioners.

    Are these serious efforts? I received several calls at home from a surgeon following a recent procedure. Found out later that it’s a tactic to mitigate lawsuits.

    Sounds genuine.

    I’ve worked in hospitals and never once did I heard anyone ever apologize for price gouging or ripping off either patients or taxpayers.

      Why would they be apologizing to tax payers? Social Contract political theory makes that whole thought process null-and-void.

      Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements are well below private insurance and self pay. Why should they apologize to taxpayers?

    Last hospital I spent some serious time in (just last year) had to be worked over really good before they would even admit that they were wrong or made a mistake about anything.

    Medical Malpractice is a very serious issue, I find it very disconcerting that apologies are being used to compensate for a doctor accidentally giving you a new kidney when you needed a new lung.

    I would actually find that refreshing if a Doctor apologized to me.

    I mean I would still sue him for the clothes of his back, but it would be better than no apology.
