Very interesting article on willpower. Makes sense.
Devon, in regard to the French vs the fat American, do you know any data on relative sugar vs corn syrup used in the diet?
I would guess they use old fashion “table sugar” for their cooking and processed food preparation.
Our high fructose corn syrup results among other problems in less satiety from our meals, thus we eat more.
As video games become more advanced and more virtual, it will be interesting to see how creativity, decision-making, etc. improves.
Also, what happens when we get to the point where “video-games” (will be called “V-reality games” at that point or something similar) become so advanced that they can send pain-impulses to the brain/body?
How will *that* affect people’s abilities?
I’ve seen the willpower/success thing before. I’m not sure if that’s a good for a bad thing. As a society, we don’t seem to have a lot of willpower.
You’ve probably heard of the studies that observed will power in young children. Observers offered the kids one cookie (or it may have been a piece of candy) which the kids were free to eat immediately. Before stepping out of the room, researchers explained to the kids that if they (while in possession of the sweets) held off and waited something like 10 minutes until the observers returned, the kids would get an extra cookie. This research has been ongoing for several decades and kids who held off and waited to eat the cookie (in return for an extra cookie 10 minutes later) were far more successful in life decades later.
