The first human egg cells that have been grown entirely in the laboratory from stem cells could be fertilized later this year in a development that will revolutionize fertility treatment and might even lead to a reversal of the menopause in older women.

Scientists are about to request a license from the UK fertility watchdog to fertilize the eggs as part of a series of tests to generate an unlimited supply of human eggs….

    Isn’t menopause supposed to serve an evolutionary purpose? Something about providing older females with an incentive to care for their grandchildren? I realize that wisdom teeth also served an evolutionary purpose but are now just supporting the oral surgeon industry. However, this seems like a bigger deal.

    It will be interesting to see the implications of this technology.

    This post reminds me of the movie Gattaca, where human reproduction was considered too important to be left to chance by nature. I wonder what it will be like in generations to come? Will parents select for characteristics of their children like ordering a customized computer from Dell’s website?
